The job is to swim out and save lives, either at the beach or the pool. Oh sure, mostly the job is to blow the whistle at kids who are horsing around, but now and then… saving lives. Like a gym rat, this implies a lot of physical exercise, which explains the increased wound threshold. Since lifeguards have to always be on the lookout, it can substitute for Notice as well.
