There are all kinds of detectives out there, ranging from the police (who usually are specialized in financial crimes, homicide, sex crimes, vice, etc), to store detectives (who are basically bouncers for shoplifting), to private detectives who run background checks and follow spouses.
There a couple common elements in all these detective sub-species: they all have to pay attention, and they all tend to see people at their least admirable. This detective is aging, cynical, weary, and honest most of the time. Every now and again, though, he just can’t be friggin’ bothered.
